IRC Users Guide
This guide explains what IRC is, how to get on, how to register your
nick, and how to ajoin channels.
It was written by ADude and Mikey. Feel free to link to it from your forums for your members..
IRC is an instant chat program that allows for quick and easy communications between players and for more efficient wartime coordinating. Plus its a great way to better get to know your alliance mates! It is suggested that you use IRC as much as possible as a member of SK.
IRC can be accessed through a “Client” these clients, keep in mind that there are several clients available. Below I have listed and described how to use 3 of the most popular clients.
Although it is a downloadable program this is by far one of the best to use, if you are interested in using mIRC just download it here http://www.mirc.com/get.php , it only takes a couple of minutes to set up and it is easy to navigate.
Once you have downloaded mIRC and open up the program there will be a message asking you to register your copy, you do not have to do this and can just click through it.
After you have the program fully loaded a “mIRC Options” box will appear, what you want to do here is too first type out your nick name, remember that you should try to keep it close to your in game nation or ruler name (as an Example mine is Mikeyrox) next you want to type out an alternative in case it disconnects, you do not need to type a name but it is suggested that you add your email.
Next, you want to select the drop down menu on the “Connect” option on the side bar and then select “Severs” and then click on the add button, from here you need to enter all the information that will connect you to the coldfront server.
Description: your name for it (I suggested that you use “PT” or Project Terra )
IRC Sever: frozen.coldfront.net
Groups: you can leave this blank
Password: you can leave this black as well.
Once you have filled this out just select the “Add” option and then simply press the connect button and you will be connected to Coldfront.
Simplest of them all, use a website like Mibbit to connect to IRC from your browser. Click the link below and enter your desired nickname to go to our public channel. As the channel is public, you should not talk about wars or other sensitive information in there.
ChatZilla is a nice IRC add on for Mozilla Firefox. Once you have downloaded it, you are going to want to type in the type box /attach irc.coldfront.net - this will connect you to the coldfront server. Once connected, I recommend right clicking the little box that says irc.coldfront.net and selecting Auto Join. This will automatically connect you to Coldfront whenever you open ChatZilla. After you have joined a channel, you can do the same thing, right clicking on its little box, to automatically join that channel on startup to.
To choose or change your nick type /Nick [your desired nickname]
Now that you have connected to IRC you will need to register your nick name so that you can access all our private channels, and so that other people cannot get onto your nick and pretend to be you. (anyone who goes onto a registered nick without identifying the password will not receive their channel privileges and will therefore be exposed as fakes).
Step 1: Pick a name, to do this type /Nick Addyournickhere
Step 2:You now need to register your name to do this just use this command /ns register password emailaddress (the email NEEDS to be valid)
Step 3: Once you complete step 2 just go to your email and check for any new emails, this will have your validation code that you need to activate your nick name. Once you have the code just enter it like this:
/ ns AUTH *add the number that was in your email
Now that you have register you will need to log on to IRC, to do this we use a command known as “Identification” and remember you need to do this every time that you log on. Just enter the following code to gain access to your nick:
/NS identify *yourpassword
As a side note, if you use chatzilla you can have it auto-identify your nickname every time you start. To do this, just go to Chatzilla -> Preferences -> irc.coldfront.net -> lists, click add, and type "identify password" and hit ok at the bottom. This will automatically identify you whenever you start up CZ, so you don't have to worry about it!
Once you have identified it is suggested that you use an feature known as “AJOIN” this will automatically join all of your channels as soon as you identify, so you don't have to keep manually joining them every time you connect. To set up your ajoin just enter the following:
/ns ajoin add #channelname
Or, as stated, you can use the Chatzilla built in feature to auto-join certain channels. If you use the built in CZ feature, it will bring up those channels automatically, even if you have no identified.
/j #channel (or /join #channel if you want to be fancy ) is how to join a particular channel. We suggest joining our public channel to start off. Our Channel is #SK. The Project-Terra channel, if you are interested, is #project-terra.
